Dear Maynard Family,
The past few weeks have seen the dedication of the Maynard team and the remembrance of incredible journalists who fought for diversity and inclusion in the news.
Amid kicking off the California Local News Fellowship Editing Fellowship and attending NLGJA, we're remembering early Maynard alum Mia Navarro, who passed away last week, and Maynard Institute Co-Founder Roy Aarons.
Mia Navarro was an intrepid New York Times reporter who highlighted Latinx and Caribbean communities during the AIDS crisis, and then continued to fight for Latinx and Puerto Rican representation and inclusion in journalism. Roy Aarons came out as gay at the American Society of Newspaper Editors convention in 1990 and then promptly founded NLGJA to promote better coverage of LGBTQIA+ people in news.
As we continue our work with editors who are taking their positions this month in local California newsrooms, we remain committed to ensuring that emerging journalists are empowered to cover their own communities.

Mia Navarro, former reporter for the New York Times and Editor-In-Chief of Brennan en Español at the Brennan Center for Justice, passed away this week after a long battle with breast cancer.
“Mia was a classmate in the institute’s summer-long journalism ‘boot camp,’ the Summer Program for Minority Journalists. Her talent, ability and knowledge were obvious from the first day,” Evelyn Hsu wrote. Read more. |
