Dear Maynard Family,
October has been an extraordinarily busy and exciting month for the Maynard Institute team, as our work has taken us across the country to connect with colleagues, deepen partnerships and advance our mission.
From the Local News Policy Summit in San Antonio and SPJ26 in Columbus to Local News Camp in Durham, the Propel Regional Training Series in Burbank and the Fire Up Entrepreneurship Program in Pasadena, our team has been engaged in conversations and initiatives shaping the future of journalism.
The Local News Policy Summit reinforced a central message: rebuilding local journalism requires more than funding newsrooms. It demands coordinated public policy, equitable investment, workforce development and coalitions that bring journalism organizations, community advocates, policymakers and philanthropy together.
This vision is reflected in two central areas of Maynard's work: advancing equitable journalism policy through national coalition building and developing the entrepreneurial and leadership capacity of local news organizations through Fire Up. Both are essential to a healthy, sustainable and inclusive local news ecosystem.
To help lead these efforts, we're excited to announce that Shayla Moon is joining the Institute as our new Director of Coalition Building, and Doris Truong has been elevated to Director of the Fire Up Program. These appointments reflect our commitment to building the leadership and organizational capacity necessary to advance this work. |

Fired: The DOGE layoffs hit Black women hard. A year later, many are still reeling. |
|
By Lottie Joiner, Maynard Alum
"This series reveals how the mass federal layoffs not only shattered livelihoods and upended families, but also devastated the Black women who have often been the backbone of their families and communities. FIRED traces the intimate emotional and structural toll of the mass firings and explores a central question: What happens to an entire community when the women holding it together are pushed to the breaking point? This series is a collaboration between MindSite News, Capital B, The 19th and The Nation and was edited by MindSite News.) Read More. |

A shot rang out. M.L.K. went down. And a reporter's instincts kicked in. |
|
By Marc Lacey
"Reporters believe that if you are there, you can see what happens and then you can tell it, the real story, witnessed firsthand," Caldwell wrote more than 50 years after the assassination. "That day day — April 4, 1968 — was my lesson on what really happens: you are there, yet you don't see everything. But inn the tangle of events, there is a sliver of whatever it is that happened that comes past you, and that's precious." Read More.
